Told Ya

Well, Snakes is on the loose and is tearing up the box office, ok, maybe not. Like I figured, after all the hype, people have figured out that it's still a dumb movie with a dumb title (still, a fun title, yes) and it should make UP TO 21 million (they're figuring 18-21) for the weekend.

Figure next week as most horror/action flicks do it'll lose 60% of the box office and make 8-10, and by the end it'll be lucky to clear 50-60 million. Look, that ain't bad really, but after all these reports of Snakes bloggers/internet buzz changing the face of movies? Nah. Not with this one, anyway.

This is the movie that should have tried to push the multi-format release instead of Bubble. I bet SoaP would have opened huge on DVD, as well as earning a decent amount at the box office. I think it was only the hard-core SoaP fans that went to see it in the theater. The rest of us who are intersted in seeing, yet don't want to spend $10 to see it in a theater that inundates us with commercials and crap food, will have to wait for DVD. And you know what, my interest may have just waned by then.

And there's Half-Nelson. A movie I would go see. Alas, it is only playing in limited realease. Another movie, along with Little Miss Sunshine, which I think would have also benefited by the multi-format release.

Oh well, here's to wishful thinking that maybe one day we can watch whatever movie we want whenever we want as soon as it becomes available.

Now they're only estimating $13.8 for the weekend ($15.2 if you count Thursday night). Has to be considered a real disappointment, considering. It didn't even beat Talladega Nights in its third week.

Tavis -- I think Half-Nelson would have suffered the same disappointing numbers as Bubble did if it had opened multi-format because it's just as small. No one knows who Ryan Gosling is outside a certain age group or independent minded moviegoers who have been waiting to see this film since Sundance. I think the only way they're gonna really start a multi-format explosion is if they release a huge blockbuster... which the studio doesn't need to do.

I do think you're right though that SoaP could have cashed in on the multi-format release but at the end of the day, to get a huge opening weekend, you need a huge audience and SoaP was betting way too much on a target audience to deliver.

I was at a 9:15 p.m. show opening day with only about 50 people in the theater which, to me, is a shame because I think it lives up to the hype and is, for a thriller, a very good film. Perfect? No way. Flawed? Most certainly. Do I care? Naw. That was one heck of an adventure.

Wow, 13+ mil, that is a disappointment. Yeah, all of this multi-format stuff just isn't gonna do it any time soon. Also, I was reading someone's post on another blog (forget who and where) and they were discussing digital quality and seeing movies in 3d,a nd how all movies will eventually be shown in 3D. Really? Like Failure To Launch...in 3D?

I've heard they're also working on a way to incorporate smells into the movie going experience. And possibly jolts from the seats.

maybe the blog world isn't as big as "the real world" and we all assumed it would do huge numbers because of the internet hype we see each day... but in reality it fizzled like any old b-flick
