Finally got around to slapping together "best flick" list from last year. I had a lot of catching up to do, and still have more to go. I still haven't seen Babel, The Prestige, The Illusionist, Pan's, Casino Royale, Half Nelson, or the Good Shepard. But I've seen enough to make a decent list. Here:

Underrated gems - Idiocracy & Slither. Both pretty fun movies, and worth a look.
Not bad for a chick flick - The Holiday.
Some days I like it, some I don't - Brick.
The Worst - V For Vendetta. What a god-awful bore. Also, Art School Confidential, The DaVinci Code & Underworld 2 sucked pretty hard.

I thought The Proposition was great. Last I heard, the director, John Hillcoat, has signed on to direct Cormac McCarthy's "The Road."

If Underworld 2 was a person, I'd have punched it in the face, kicked in the ribs when it was down then jumped on its balls. Just for being an indulgent piece of crap with little story and one of the worst sex scenes I've ever seen.
I've seen all on your list and have to say it's pretty good.
Don't forget to see Blood Diamond.
Idiocracy is the funniest I've seen last year. Stupid too (but that was probably the point).
V for Vendetta. Hurts my feelings you think that way.

Marie Antoinette is on my worst list... nothing grips my gonads more than over self indulgent directors... PT Anderson better not disappoint me this year or I will give up on him
MQ - Well, I'll have to disagree, but I hear where you're coming from. Sometimes directors do need someone to reign them in a bit. Peter Jackson's King Kong is a good example, although I liked the movie a lot, it would have been a cooler flick if it ran around 2 hrs.
As for Sofia, I really liked what she did with Marie. She had a vision and she made it happen. I'd rather see that anyday over some generic hack with nothing to say.
I just saw Blood Diamond. Very solid.
Ola! I have to say that I did love LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. I also have to say that I've not seen a lot of the "top" or "critically acclaimed" films.
CARS was an instant classic. The kids love, we love it.
I just didn't get it with RICKY BOBBY. But I didn't get OLD SCHOOL either. I guess you have to have a penis to get it.
I saw both UNITED 93 and WORLD TRADE CENTER. I thought UNITED 93 was much more intense than the latter. And I had anticipated it would be the other way.

I think I've seen all of 2 movies this year..."The Devil Wears Prada" and "Dreamgirls." And both of those I saw on DVD, not at the theater. The former was very good and the latter was kind of like a Lifetime movie.

You must see The Painted Veil. Seems like a total snoozer through the first 20 minutes, but them smolders throughout. One of the best films of '06.
